Rippl

Rippl is a web-based video recording application to be used in Surf Life Saving Competitions. It allows judges and competitors the ability to clearly see who has crossed the finish at exactly what time, removing confusion and frustration in determining contestant placements. It offers 2 modes: Recording and Playback.

Problem

During Surf Life Saving Race Events, it’s difficult to determine the placements of athletes when many athletes are crossing the finish line at similar times. This invites confusion, confrontation, and frustration for judges, spectators, and athletes.
The judges also have difficulty determining the exact position of the finish line.

Solution

I developed a video application software platform that allows judges to record the race from two different towers/angles: North and South. The judges can add markers on the timeline to indicate start and end race times as well as any other generic markers. The judges can also add a virtual finish line that they overlay and reposition on the video to better understand who crossed the finish line first.

The application offers 2 different modes: RECORDING and PLAYBACK, each with it’s own functionality. In PLAYBACK mode they can re-watch the recorded video, zoom in, and view it frame by frame if needed, and export clips.

I codenamed the application ‘Rippl’ as an alias since the client did not yet have a name for it. He liked the alias enough that the wanted to keep it. I designed the logo and brand identity for the application.
